The movie Baadshaho takes a plunge into the emergency era of 1975, when the Maharani was arrested for withholding gold without declaration at Jaigarh Fort. The darkest and most controversial chapter of Rajmata’s life would be alive on the screen with Ileana D’Cruz play-acting the ravishing princess of Cooch Behar.

9th May 1940| The princess married Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur
The nuptial association spurred gossips as it was a love marriage not arranged by her parents and the king already had two wives by then.
15th August 1947 | Day of Independence
The true queen, Gayatri Devi took care of her subjects, both Hindu and Muslim amidst the India-Pakistan partition chaos.
July 1962| Historic victory in Lok Sabha elections
She won the constituency of Jaipur as an independent candidate with 192,909 votes out of 250,272. Her historic victory was marked in the Guinness Book of World Records.
June 1975| The emergency and imprisonment
After the Declaration of National Emergency, Gayatri Devi and her step son were held prisoners in the Tihar Jail, Delhi under the allegations of breaking Tax Laws. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister and Rajmata’s long-lost friend back from Tagore’s Gurukul raided Jaigarh Fort. The government seized the gold and transferred it to Delhi in a truck. The movie Baadshaho focuses on this operation along with various obstacles, secrets, and revelations.
Throughout her life, Maharani Gayatri Devi fought for the rights of women, and prostitutes, murderers, pickpockets etc. who lead a pitiful life in the Tihar Jail. She was an untamed and dauntless woman who always worked for the welfare of her subjects no matter how shady and troublesome her personal life was becoming.
After the death of her husband in the year 1970 and her only son King Jagat Singh in the year 1977, the Maharani alone braved the challenges with grace. She refused to abide by the regressive purdah custom. She started schools for girls in Jaipur, including Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ Public School.
29th July 2009| A quiet death
She had an inextinguishable and ardent fire in her to uplift her people and support them to outshine. Rajmata died a silent death on 29th July 2009 but the flames of her radiant fire blazes even today in the form of the revolutions she brought in the fields of education, women empowerment etc. to name a few.
