Instant Divorce, Instant Indignity: Twitteratis’ Take On Triple Talaq

Until yesterday, taking a divorce was like ordering pizza for Indian Muslim men. Talaq-i-Biddat, the “instant divorce” Shariat practice gave Muslim men the liberty to divorce their wives by uttering “Talaq talaq talaq” or more conveniently through Skype and instant-messengers like WhatsApp. This “instant prejudice facility” was declared unconstitutional by Supreme Court in a historic verdict on Tuesday.

The fight against triple talaq was led by 5 women, including Afreen Rehman (from Jaipur), an MBA in finance who receive the divorce through speed post in the year 2016. The other lead petitioners were Shayara Bano, Gulshan Parveen, Atiya Sabri and Ishrat Jahan.

With the news fuming all around, #TripleTalaq trend at No.1 spot in worldwide on micro-blogging site Twitter for over 6 hours. Twitteratis welcomed the verdict with all the jubilant sarcasm, pun, and opinions. Here’s how Twitter celebrated the abolishment of Triple Talaq.
